I now have an embarrassing number of raw recipe books all full of post its, all include drink/smoothie recipes, none include dump 4-8 cups of spinach into your high speed blender and something else for a great tasting smoothie.
I was surprised, I just can’t find this recipe and I need help. This morning I tried my 4+ cups of spinach with a lemon and some fresh orange juice, that was fine, I just feel like I should not have to reinvent the wheel. Does anyone feel committed to this green smoothie tastes great and has tons of green in it?
I think spinach and banana doesn’t really work to well…I tried spinach with apple that is fine…I love how pretty they have all been although they get really frothy and in kind of a weird unmanageable way if you let it sit. I end up with this huge green mustache…
I’ve actually had fun inventing my own green smoothie recipes. Beet greens and fruit. Savory green smoothies with cilantro, ginger, garlic, & jalapeño. I loved frozen cherries and banana but didn’t care so much for apple and watermelon. Dill was good. Mustard greens yucky. I’ve even thrown zucchini and tomatoes into green smoothies. I still plan to try basil and I’m planning to grow 8 different heirloom lettuce varieties in containers this summer to throw into green smoothies. Of course Victoria Boutenko’s ‘Green for Life’ book has many green smoothie recipes which gave me lots of ideas for making my own.

Thanks so much for the tips, there is hope then! This morning I resorted last minute to another spinach and lemon/orange and I realized it was exaserbating my reflux so I had to leave most of it in the fridge. I think the ginger will be very helpful and it seems like I should plan to just do lettuces for a while, spinach is a tough bird to start with. I love jalepeno too! I will try that and habenero. Tomato is also a basic food until it gets cooked, then it gets very acidic. So I will try tomato, lettuce, hot pepper, and ginger. One last effort at spinach might be: spinach, avocado, soy sauce, hot pepper. Got to order Green for Life…

nice post
Hi rawfoodist,
I am following the Eat to Live lifestyle (which is high nutrient eating). I absolutely love smoothies and have had success using spinach. The key for me has been to start with baby spinach. It is mild and really enjoyable. The smoothie recipes I’ve used have come from the Dr. Fuhrman books I have and the online member forum. If you notice your body reacting with more acid I’ve found that that means there’s either too much citrus in the drink / too much greenage. When that’s happened to me I try and make the next smoothie with less greenage and then gradually get my body used to having more.
My typical smoothie is frozen banana, frozen berries of some sort, baby spinach, walnuts / sprouted flax seed, and unsweetend soy milk–into the Vita-mix. I’ve also heard that ice cubes are a great addition but I never have them hanging around. There’s my two cents worth!
Happy blending!

this is my own concoction, I call it my chocolate shake
raw cacoa
macadamia/almond milk (my homemade, another recipe)
spinach
bananas
raw coconut oil
raw agave
2 inch vanilla bean piece soaked w/water
you can add water if you want it thinner… warning this is rich and you may want to use when you have a sweet tooth or chocolate cravings… not your every day green smoothie
My friend has a friend very into raw foods. This smoothie is GREAT! What a great way to get several servings of raw veggies in one drink
2 cups spinach
2 cups mixed greens
1/2 avocado
2 stalks celery
1 apple
water to thin it out
Put it all in your blender and whir it up! Enough for 2. When I make it for just myself I just cut the recipe in half. I also like a little squeeze of fresh lime juice on top.
I think it all depends on your taste preference. You said you don’t like banana with spinach and others may disagree. I think adding lots of nuts with spinach hinders the bland taste, and adding apples can sweeten it up. I’ve also tried pear instead of apple. The best part of making these smoothies is trying different things, and once you find something you love – stick with it. You can also add stevia for added sweetness.
I have an idea for a green drink. The combination of a tiny bit of habanero, orange, lime, basil and greens is really good. You could do any combo of cilantro, kale, spinach, parsley or any mild greens that you like. If you try it let me know.
